"You wake up one morning and suddenly you're a star"
Robert Pattinson
Sixth lead on "Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire" four years ago, Robert Pattinson is now a phenomenon thanks to the Twilight Saga.
For the worst or the best ? Interview with the hottest actor of the moment.
For the worst or the best ? Interview with the hottest actor of the moment.
Premiere: First thing first Rob, I'd like to know your hairdresser's address and your hair gel's brand...
Rob : You want the truth ? I only cut my hair during the shootings.
Last time I saw you, during the american promotion of Twilight last november, you didn't seem to fully realized what was happening to you...
I think no one really knows what's happening. It's so rare... It's a mix of chance and coincidence. You wake up one morning and suddenly you're a star. It's weird. Everybody knows you but you haven't change for one bit. I fully realized everything in Cannes Film Festival. I was at a restaurant, enjoying some alone time and when I got out two hours later, 500 people were waiting for me outside. They had to raise me -litteraly- towards the car. When you think about it, it's silly. (Laugh)
You surely wanted to ask these 500 people what they were doing there...
Of course ! I'm sure if I had ask one of them if she wanted to have lunch, she would be so embarrassed that she won't ever scream my name.
There! You have to invite each one to have lunch to get your normal life back...
One by one. Great idea !
Must be hard to keep it down to earth when the celebrity came to you like that, isn't it ?
I don't know. Probably. But I don't feel like I'm turning into someone else.
The most embarrassing thing is to tell your friends you can't go somewhere with them because you know pretty well that paparazzis are gonna wait for you there. I feel like a moron in these moments. I always have to be careful because at any time someone can film me or record what I'm saying. I could work non-stop: at least on the sets, the security allows me to have some privacy. What a relief !
Your movies sets are the only places were you can have a private life ?
Crazy, isn't it ? I didn't find anywhere I could disappear yet. Even in the further removed places, there's always someone to recognize me and ask for a picture. Frankly, I didn't know I was that recognizable. (Laugh)
So you have to be really carefull as how to behave, must be hard, especially when you're 23. I remember when I was 23... Better not have a camera on me all the time.
Exactly. I'm worried to know just how long my patience would hold, when will be the time I'm just gonna do something stupid. Wait and see...
Do you tell yourself sometimes "I didn't sign for this" ?
All the time. A few months ago, I was on the nerve to go nuts, I was becoming paranoid. Then I began a new movie and it got better. I can't turn my back on the situation and just ignore it. If tomorrow I say: "OK, I've had enough, I quit", everything will still be the same. I have to accept it, stay zen because I don't have any control. I'm a very discreet person, so it's not easy. But whinning won't change anything.
Ironically, in two years, when Twilight will be over, you'll have to get that character who made you famous out of people's mind or you'll always be Edward Cullen for them...
It doesn't scare me. When I'm at a meeting for another project, there's no confusion between Edward Cullen and me. To the contrary, it's more like: "If you're interested in the movie and you can bring us Twilight fans, then banco !" They would even let me play a woman I think.
Are there boys in the Twilight fans ?
A few... More and more boys ask me for an autograph, actually. Or they only want it to sell it on ebay. (Laugh)
Three days after the shooting of New Moon, you began Remember Me, a romantic comedy of Allen Coulter, and then now Eclipse, the third movie of the Twilight franchise. If we count Madeleine Stowe Western you're gonna play in, that makes you 5 days of release in the year...
And if everything goes well, next january I'll be shooting "Bel Ami" in Paris, for three months and then after that, the shooting of the fourth and last movie of the franchise may begins, Breaking Dawn.
So you're booked for two years ?
Kind of. I just have one week at the end of the summer which I'm gonna spend with my friends or I'm gonna forget all about them. (Laugh) It's crazy.
I suppose it's your only way to escape all the craziness around you...
...And you're right.

"I'm always surprised to hear that Edward is like the perfect man. For me, he's a character full of anger, and a little disturbing"
Robert Pattinson
"I was under the pressure of the phenomal success of the first movie. I don't want to be the one who killed the franchise"
Chris Weitz
