Kristen on why she chose to play a rocker and a stripper

J.: Qu'as-tu ressenti après avoir gagné le Orange BAFTA du meilleur espoir?
K.: "Je ne m'habituerai jamais à tout ça: se retrouver devant une foule de personnes que vous respectez. Vous vous sentez vraiment toute petite, pas dans le mauvais sens du terme, mais ça vous donne une bonne dose de perspective de prendre la parole devant tout ces gens."

J.: Est-ce le commencement de quelque chose d'encore plus grand ?
K.: "La liste des nominés était si importante, c'est bien de reconnaître le talent de certains. C'est vraiment un honneur, mais je ne pense pas que ça va m'aider à décrocher mon prochain grand rôle."

J.: La nuit suivante, vous étiez nommée "Femme de l'année"...
K.: "Vous passez des BAFTAs au Elle Style Awards, en remportant le titre de "Femme de l'année" à 19 ans, c'est complètement fou, je suis vraiment émue."

J.: Vous interprétez Joan Jett dans votre nouveau film, pourquoi avoir choisi ce rôle?
K.: "J'étais fan de la musique de Joan Jett mais je ne connaissais pas The Runaways, c'est une des raisons pour lesquelles je voulais faire le film. Je pense que les jeunes de mon âge ne les connaissent pas forcément. Et elles ont été, en quelques sortes, la base des groupes de rock féminin. Elles ont vraiment dû se battre pour y arriver et je me suis sentie concernée en tant que jeune adulte de ma génération. On a grandit dans un monde où on nous disait qu'on pouvait faire tout ce que l'on désirait, mais ce n'était pas du tout le cas pour elles. Ça été très dur pour Joan. Elle était différente des autres, beaucoup se sont interposés."

J.: Il y avait-il une pression supplémentaire d'interpréter quelqu'un d'aussi connu?
K.: "Bien sûr. Je sais ce que c'est d'interpréter un personnage adoré de tous. Bella est vraiment une icône. La différence entre les deux, c'est que je ne pourrai jamais rencontrer Bella et lui dire: 'Hé, est-ce que je rends honneur au moment le plus important de ta vie?'.
Joan est également devenue une de mes amies et elle est la productrice exécutive, elle était présente sur le tournage tous les jours. Elle a vraiment été une grande source d'inspiration et de motivation et était toujours disponible".

J: Vous jouez une stripteaseuse dans "Welcome To The Rileys". Que pouvez-vous nous dire...
K.: "On redoutait d'exploiter le personnage de Mallory plus qu'elle ne l'était dans la vie. Ce n'était pas les scènes de nudité qui me faisait le plus peur, et pourtant j'ai vraiment dû tout enlever, ce qui n'est jamais facile."

J.: Ça fait du bien de s'éloigner de Bella?
K.: "J'ai beaucoup de chance d'avoir l'opportunité de suivre un personnage aussi longtemps car c'est rare. Certains ne vous quittent pas vraiment, vous les gardez en vous. C'est agréable de changer, bien sûr, c'est mon métier mais c'est aussi agréable de pouvoir l'interpréter à nouveau."

J.: Êtes-vous protectrice envers Bella?
K.: "Si vous n'êtes pas en position de défendre le personnage que vous interprétez, vous ne pouvez pas justifier les choses qu'ils font. Ce serait impossible de se mettre dans leur peau si vous n'y croyez pas."

J.: Quel effet ça vous fait d'être une idole pour tous les fans de Twilight?
K.: "Je n'ai pas l'impression d'avoir cette responsabilité car je ne prétends pas être quelqu'un que je ne suis pas, et quiconque aurait interpréter Bella se serait retrouver à ma place. C'est un personnage très fort à qui on peut s'identifier, j'espère lui rendre justice. .Je suis très reconnaissante de faire ce que j'aime et que les gens apprécient.
Mais en terme "de modèle", les gens vont devoir choisir car je ne conviendrai pas à tout le monde."

How did you feel winning the Orange Rising Star Award?
"I would never get used to something like that, [standing up] in front of a room full of people that you respect. You feel so small, not in a bad way, but it's such an extreme dose of perspective to stand up there and speak to these people."

Does this mean the start of even bigger things?
"The list of nominees was so substantial, it's nice to acknowledge people who are doing cool things. It's truly humbling and such an honour, but I don't think it's going to suddenly get me my next big job."

The next night you were named woman of the year...
"You go from the Baftas to the Elle Style Awards - winning Woman of The Year at 19, which is just an insane concept, so I am pretty overwhelmed."

You play Joan Jett in your new movie, why did you choose that role?
"I was a fan of Joan's music but I didn't know about The Runaways, and that was one of the reasons I wanted to do the film because I think people my age are fairly unaware of them. And they sort of kick-started females playing more hardcore rock and roll and not being told to quiet down and dull down their aggression.

"It was something that they really had to fight for and I feel entitled to that, as a young girl of my generation. We've grown up being told that we can do whatever we want, and it really wasn't the case for them. It was really hard for Joan. She was so different from other girls, she really took a lot of strife."

Was there an added pressure when playing someone so famous?
"Yeah of course - I know what it's like to play a character that people know and adore, clearly. I mean, Bella is definitely an iconic character. The difference between the two is I could never meet Bella and say 'Hey, so the most important part of your life - am I doing it justice?' and also Joan became such a close friend, she's our executive producer, she was there on set everyday. She was SO nurturing and motivating and open."

You play a stripper in Welcome to the Rileys. Tell us about that...
"One thing we were concerned with was not exploiting Mallory more than she already was in her real life. I wasn't concerned about nude scenes, but I definitely did have to shred every single layer of defence possible, which is never really an easy thing to do.

"I don't choose characters just because they're really hardcore and they're edgy - this girl is really sort of broken and sweet."

Is it good to get away from playing Bella?
"I'm really lucky that I get to focus on one character for so long, because you never get that. It's just so indulgent. I have years to focus on one character. They still live inside you a little bit, you can still remember them. So it is nice to change it up, of course, that's why I do what I do, but it's also nice to go back."

So are you protective of Bella as a character?
"I guess to play any character, if you're not in a position to defend them, then you can't justify the things that they do. It would be impossible to play them if you didn't believe that one would actually do those things."

What's it like being such an idol to Twilight fans?
"I don't harbour such a huge sense of responsibility because I can't claim to be anything beside who I am, and whoever played Bella was going to be in this position. She's such a strong solid female character to look up to, that hopefully I do her justice. I'm really thankful that I have a platform to do what I love and people appreciate it.

"But in terms of being a role model then people just have to pick and choose their role models because I'm definitely not for everyone."
